Gujo Hachiman Miyama Cave

Miyama Cave is a rare vertical-hole cave and one of Japan’s largest three-dimensional maze-type caves. These remarkable formations occur when groundwater slowly dissolves limestone from top to bottom, creating multi-layered, step-like structures. The softly curved walls and intricate stalactites evoke the sensation of "passing through a womb," offering a deep connection to nature’s craftsmanship.

Unlike many developed caves, Miyama Cave has remained untouched by artificial modifications and has been designated a Natural Monument by Gujo City. Formed over more than 200 million years, this breathtaking underground world is a true masterpiece of nature.

Caving Adventure – Intermediate Level

While some parts of Miyama Cave are illuminated for general sightseeing, many sections remain completely dark. This caving experience allows you to explore these unlit passageways, equipped with a helmet, protective suit, boots, and a headlamp.

Step into the unknown and journey through the depths of the cave, relying only on the faint glow of your headlamp. You will need to use your entire body—your hands, feet, back, and even your buttocks—to navigate the narrow, winding tunnels. Strategic thinking is essential as you plan your route through this natural labyrinth. Along the way, you might have a surprise encounter with a bat or discover tiny cave-dwelling creatures rarely seen by humans.

*Available for children in 4th grade and above, but children must be accompanied by a guardian.

What to Wear
Wear clothing suitable for outdoor activities:

Long sleeves and long pants that allow for movement
Warm layers (e.g., fleece) for cooler temperatures
Long boots will be provided on-site
